This piece was painted over a number of sessions on location high up on the Spinc in Glendalough. It was the submission that won me a place on series 10 of Landscape Artist of the Year and was with me in my pod in the Clifton suspension bridge heat.
I’ve painted along this route and area a lot now, it's known as the Spinc which means ‘Pointed Hill’ in Irish. This view is along the high track that runs along the cliffside looking toward the Spinc and its dramatic cliffs. It’s windy up on this track so had to be patient for days with less wind to set up a canvas that size here. It's one of my favourite views looking this way toward the cliffs, the shadow that's cast here is something i'm especially drawn to paint again and again. It changes during the day with the sun and during the seasons, its a place where you can really appreciate how we rotate and change as we face the sun differently.
This piece showed me I can bring a larger surface up into the mountains as long as the wind is behaving!
I wrote a short piece on the experience of applying and my heat here.
