Poolbeg and the Great South Wall, Dublin, Ireland
Poolbeg and the Great South Wall has always captivated me from a young age. This iconic place is steeped in history and striking structures.
Nestled at the entrance to Dublin Bay the Great South Wall was completed in the early 19th century, it’s an engineering marvel with its iconic red lighthouse, known as the Poolbeg Lighthouse. The lighthouse, a subject of fascination for artists over the years, was first established in 1767, making it one of the oldest lighthouses in Ireland. The original lighthouse was a wooden structure, and it wasn't until 1820 that the current stone tower was constructed. Over the centuries, it has provided a guiding light to countless vessels navigating Dublin Bay.
The Poolbeg chimneys have been iconic landmarks of Dublin since their construction in the 1960s. They were part of the Poolbeg Generating Station which is now decommissioned, thankfully the chimneys are protected structures so will continue to be in the skyline around the city and remain visible from the mountains that surround Dublin.
It's an inspiring place to do some plein air painting and one I'll continue to visit.
